April Reflection

A Month of Recognition, Impact, and Pathways to the Future

April was a defining month—one that brought together recognition, real-world experience, and transformative opportunities for our youth.

At SCORE, our mission is rooted in empowerment—and this month, that mission was on full display.

At the center of it all was our President, Dr. Tayari Kuanda, who was honored by the High Desert Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. as a 2026 “Community Gem.”

A Well-Deserved Recognition

This honor reflects years of dedication to students, families, and community advancement. The recognition highlighted Dr. Kuanda’s unwavering commitment to bridging gaps and creating meaningful opportunities for young people across the High Desert.

The Community Gems and Scholarship Awards Banquet, held on April 12, 2026, at the Adelanto Event Center, celebrated leaders whose impact continues to shape lives—and this moment affirmed that the work being done through SCORE is both seen and valued.

From Recognition to Real Impact: STEM in Action

Recognition was only part of the story.

Dr. Kuanda closed out the month by facilitating a powerful STEM session through EMBODI, transforming inspiration into direct engagement with students.

Connecting Classroom to Career

During this session, Dr. Kuanda shared his personal journey through STEM fields, grounding students in real-world application:

  • Former Electronics Technician and Calibration Technician in the United States Navy

  • Entrepreneur in home theater installation services

  • Experience in television, VCR, and stereo component repair

His message was clear: STEM is not abstract—it’s practical, creative, and full of opportunity.

Elevating the Experience: Industry Leaders in the Room

What made this session even more impactful was the presence of dynamic guest speakers who expanded students’ vision of what’s possible.

Aviation Pathways with Lt. Col. Tony Marshall (Ret.)

Retired Lt. Col. Tony Marshall delivered a powerful session outlining his journey:

  • Air Force pilot flying the F-4 fighter jet

  • Transition to a career as an airline pilot with American Airlines

He didn’t just share his story—he provided clear, actionable pathways for students, including how teens can begin working toward earning a pilot’s license early. His session opened doors to aviation careers that many students had never considered possible.

Technology & Entrepreneurship with Phillip Montague

IT Specialist and entrepreneur Phillip Montague brought another layer of opportunity to the session by sharing his pathway into the tech industry.

He highlighted:

  • Real-world entry points into IT careers

  • The growing demand for tech skills

  • Opportunities for teens to begin building careers early

Most notably, he introduced students to an incredible opportunity:
Tuition-free acceptance into his new IT training school, providing a direct pipeline into technology careers.

What This Month Represents

April represents alignment at the highest level:

  • Recognition of leadership and impact

  • Exposure to real-world career pathways

  • Access to tangible opportunities for students

This wasn’t just a moment—it was a movement in action.

Students didn’t just hear about success—they saw it, engaged with it, and were given tools to pursue it.

Continuing the Mission

At SCORE, we remain committed to:

  • Expanding access to education and career pathways

  • Building partnerships that create real opportunities

  • Empowering youth through mentorship and lived experience

And through OnWatch TV, we will continue to capture and amplify these moments—ensuring that stories of impact reach even further.

Looking Ahead

April ended with purpose, power, and possibility.

Because when recognition meets action—and when experience meets access—something transformative happens:

Students begin to see themselves differently.
Pathways become clearer.
And the future becomes attainable.
