Equipping Students to Navigate Systems:

EMBODI Presentation Recap

SCORE continues its work at the intersection of education, empowerment, and equity.

This week, Dr. Tayari Kuanda presented for the EMBODI program, leading a session focused on college and career readiness, with a deeper emphasis on how students can navigate systems that often create barriers to success.

Understanding the Systems

The session addressed a critical reality:

Students are often asked to succeed within systems they do not fully understand.

This presentation focused on:

  • Identifying systemic barriers
  • Recognizing how power operates within institutions
  • Developing strategies to navigate educational and career pathways

At SCORE, we believe that awareness is the first step toward equity.

Centering Voice and Representation

The session was strengthened by two powerful guest presenters:

  • Dr. La Kerie Williams shared the value of the HBCU experience, emphasizing identity, belonging, and opportunity
  • The Tony Award winning wordsmith, Poetri spoke on the importance of voice, encouraging students to speak, advocate, and take ownership of their narratives

These perspectives reinforced SCORE’s commitment to:

  • Representation
  • Student empowerment
  • Culturally relevant pathways to success

Education Beyond the Classroom

One of the key takeaways from the session is that education must extend beyond academic instruction.

Students must be equipped with:

  • Critical awareness
  • Strategic thinking
  • The confidence to advocate for themselves

Continuing the Work

SCORE remains committed to:

  • Providing students with tools to navigate complex systems
  • Supporting educational equity
  • Creating opportunities for students to engage with real-world perspectives

Closing Reflection

When students understand the systems around them, they are better prepared to navigate them.

When they find their voice, they are better prepared to transform them.
